An Elkins man remained incarcerated Monday on a $50,000 cash-only bond after police arrested him for allegedly selling cocaine late last week.
Mark Allen Shiflett, 43, of 914 South Davis Ave., was arrested and charged with possession with intent to deliver a Schedule II controlled substance, cocaine, Friday.
According to the criminal complaint in the Randolph County Magistrate Clerk's office, a team of four West Virginia State Police officers - Cpl. M.S. Wetzel, Trooper First Class J.R. Wince, Cpl. G.S. DeWeese and Sgt. J.A. Simmons with the Elkins detachment - executed a search warrant on a guest room at the EconoLodge in Elkins at about 2:45 p.m Friday.
A woman had rented the room in her name for Shiflett, its occupant, according to the report. The complaint explains that the search warrant was executed after police completed a two-week-long drug investigation, targeting Shiflett.
Wetzel, the chief investigating officer, noted that throughout the duration of the investigation, officers observed a "continuous amount of traffic" coming and going from Shiflett's room.
"On one occasion a vehicle was pulled over for a traffic violation that just departed from Mr. Shiflett's room and illegal drugs were confiscated," Wetzel wrote in the report.
Upon executing the search warrant, police found about 3.5 grams "of a white powder substance" that tested positive for having a cocaine base, the complaint states. Officers also seized $1,400 in cash, hypodermic needles, white oblong pills they believed to be Subutec, aluminum foil with a white powder they believed to be methamphetamine, a cell phone with pictures of drug transactions and a silver metal round cylinder containing a white residue.
Magistrate Rob Elbon set bond at $50,000 cash only, and Shiflett remained in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail as of presstime.
A conviction of possession with intent to deliver a Schedule II controlled substance results in a punishment of one to 15 years in the state penitentiary, a $25,000 fine or both.
