Elkins Rotary Club members were asked this week to mark their calendars for an upcoming event, sponsored by the Davis Health System Foundation.
Dan Bucher and Bob Dunkerley said the foundation is planning a street fair for the 4th of July weekend in Elkins.
"The street fair will take place along the newly constructed Martin Street in Elkins," Bucher said at Monday's Rotary meeting. "We received permission from the city of Elkins to close Martin Street between Fourth Street and Gorman Avenue for this two-day event."
Bucher said the event will run from 11 a.m. until dark July 5 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 6.
"This is an opportunity for folks to showcase their talents, especially artists, vendors, merchants, churches, civic groups, school clubs and other organizations," Bucher said. "Applications are available for vendors and exhibitors to reserve space."
Several events are planned for the day including children's games, a bicycle parade, a cake walk and carnival-type entertainment by the Old Brick Playhouse. For the first time, the Lone Wolf Cavalcade of Stars will perform free for the public, featuring local talent.
"This event is in conjunction with the sesquicentennial celebration of West Virginia," Bucher said. "The car show will be in the park. Doings at the Elkins Depot and fireworks will begin at dark Friday evening."
"We want to have an event that is community inclusive," Dunkerley said. "It's a great-looking street adjacent to the Davis Health System campus. It will be a lively event, with food and lots of family fun."
Bucher said the Davis House project has been a welcome addition to the community.
"The Davis House has been in constant use since it was dedicated," Bucher said. "Folks from Pendleton and Tucker (counties) have used the Davis House, as well as a patient from Hacker Valley who had no family and no one to help."
Bucher said a local cancer survivor stops by the Davis House at about 5:30 p.m. each day to see if the patients have any needs.
"On the day of the open house, we were $2,000 short of our goal," Bucher said. "By the end of the day, we were $7,000 over our goal."
Current Rotary members serving on the Davis Health System Foundation board include Bucher, Dunkerley, Steve Jory, Ron LaNeve, Mark Doak and Denise Campbell.
