Law enforcement officials in Randolph County are searching for a suspect in connection with a shooting at the Rich gas station along the Beverly Five-lane in Elkins.
According to initial reports, a white male wearing dark-colored pants, a dark-colored jacket and a hooded sweatshirt approached the gas station shortly after 11 p.m., firing at the clerk several times. The alleged shooter is between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-9 inches tall, weighing 135 to 150 pounds. Officials have yet to disclose if a robbery occurred prior to the shooting, but the same station was robbed last week.
Following this incident, the shooter fled the scene in the direction of Glenmore Loop Road and remains on the loose as of 4:30 a.m. Members of the Randolph County Sheriff's Department, the West Virginia State Police and the Elkins Police Department currently are conducting a massive search in the vicinity of the crime.
The victim, who has not been identified, initially was transported to Davis Memorial Hospital, but was later sent to Ruby Memorial in Morgantown. The victim's condition is unknown.
Randolph County Sheriff Mark Brady said the victim had facial wounds, but was unsure if those wounds were caused by flying glass a bullet or a bullet fragment. Brady said the victim was responsive and talking at the time first responds arrived.
Brady noted the initial call came in at approximately 11:23 p.m., and said the call was placed by someone near the scene who heard the gunshots.
"Anytime that someone is capable of shooting someone like this, people should be cautious," Brady said. "We still are searching for the suspect. I think this is an isolated incident to this store."
Law enforcement official and crime scene investigators were still at the scene as of 4 a.m. Officials are utilizing the sheriff's department mobile command unit, as well as a mobile unit from the West Virginia State Police.
