Albert Pnakovich

Mr. Albert L. Pnakovich, 96, a resident of Valley Bend, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2013, in Elkins Rehabilitation and Care Center.

He was born March 11, 1917, at Ramey, Pa., a son of the late Steven Albert and Margaret Karabas Pnakovich.

On June 28, 1941, in Baltimore, Md., he was married to Mary Mandell Pnakovich, who preceded him in death April 25, 2007.

Surviving are one son, Lawrence "Larry" Pnakovich of Elkins; a daughter, Mary Janice Williams and husband, George, of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren, Dr. George A. Williams and wife, Marla, of Washington, Jason Williams and wife, Amy, and Amylia Williams, all of Texas; and five great-grandchildren, Aaron, Jordan and Gabrielle of Washington, Lilia and Jasper of Austin, Texas.

Also preceding him in death were brothers, Martin, Adam, Stephen, Leonard, Thomas, Walter, Edward, Francis, George, Lambert and Anthony; sisters, Margaret and Delores; and daughter-in-law, Sandy Pnakovich.

In his earlier years, Mr. Pnakovich served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and played professional baseball for the St. Louis Browns (now the Baltimore Orioles), before a shoulder injury shortened his career. He was employed by Standard Sanitary Works in Baltimore, Md., as a clerk for the West Virginia State Liquor Commission in Elkins and was a coal miner for Bethlehem Steel at Monterville and mines at Bayard. He was a member of St. Brendan Catholic Church in Elkins and a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree.

The family will receive friends from 9 until 10:45 a.m. Friday, April 12, at St. Brendan Catholic Church in Elkins. The Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. Pnakovich and Mrs. Pnakovich will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday from the church with the Very Rev. Donald X. Higgs, VF as the celebrant. Interment of Mr. Pnakovich and Mrs. Pnakovich's cremains will follow in St. Brendan Cemetery.

At the request of Mr. Pnakovich, flowers are to be omitted. The family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Brendan Catholic Church, Rt. 4, Box 515, Elkins, WV 26241. Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Mr. Albert L. Pnakovich. Condolences may be expressed to the family at
