MOOREFIELD - Moorefield coach Wade Armentrout is a firm believe a strong regular-season schedule can only make his team better once the postseason begins.
The Yellow Jackets have non-conference games scheduled against Martinsburg, Petersburg, Jefferson, Berkeley Springs, Elkins, Frankfort, Allegany Md., Southern, Md., Man, South Harrison and Notre Dame.
"The only way to get better is to play a tough schedule," Armentrout said. "I think we play some very good teams with our non-conference slate, and hopefully that will get us ready for the postseason and a run at a state tournament berth.
Moorefield returns seven seniors off of last year's 19-11 squad.
The Yellow Jackets, who lost in the 2012 sectional championship game, return seniors Garrett Keller, Jared Kite, DaShawn Brown, Mikey Pultz, Lance Taylor, Adam Snyder and Grant Sherman.
Kite, Brown, Pultz, Snyder and Sherman all return in the outfield, while Keller and Taylor will see time in the infield for Moorefield.
Taylor, Keller and Brown return as the team's top pitchers from last year.
Taylor was a Class A second-team all-state selection last spring for his efforts on the mound.
"We're excited with who we return from last year," Armentrout said. "We need these guys to step up and be team leaders for us.
"They've been all playing for us since they were sophomores, so the experience is there."
Junior infielder-outfielder Seth Stickley also returns with varsity experience for Moorefield.
Sophomores Austin Williams, Tyler Smith and Dakota Vetter are all battling for playing time this year as well.
"We're excited for the season to get started," Armentrout sad.
"We have a good mixture of returning players and a good group of younger kids, so hopefully we can get things going and play as a team."
Moorefield will host Martinsburg on Tuesday in its season opener.
The Yellow Jackets will then participate in the Strasburg, Va., tournament on March 22 and 23.
