PETERSBURG - A veteran group is back to the fold for the Petersburg baseball team this season.
The Vikings went 25-9 last year under coach Bobby Jack Harman.
Petersburg lost to Berkeley Springs in the regional semifinals but Harman is optimistic the team can take another step this spring.
The Vikings return Justin Smith, Jesse Earle, Trevor Harman, Alex See, Ryan Colaw, Bret Reel, Ryan Hedrick and Corey Pool.
Smith, returns as a four-year catcher, Earle is a pitcher-first baseman, Harman, who played third base last season, will move over to second base and pitcher, See will be shortstop, Colaw returns at third base and pitcher, while Reel will be in the outfield.
"It's a pretty solid group returning," Harman said. "We'll have great leaders, and I think our defense and hitting will be strong as well."
Sophomores Brian George and Brandon George also look for playing time at the varsity level for Petersburg.
Brian George will see time as a utility player and pitcher, while Brandon George will is competing for time in the outfield and on the mound,
"Brian sat out last season due to an injury, so he is completely healthy and we're expecting him to have a strong season for us," Harman said. "Both of these guys will see time for us."
Harman likes the approach is team has taken during in preseason practices,
"The kids have been working very hard this year," he said. "We're hoping we can get back to the regionals and make a trip to the state tournament
