Young tree lovers were the central focus for the Elkins Arbor Day celebration last week. Mayor Van Broughton and the Elkins Tree Board welcomed Girl Scout Troop 1689 and Cub Scout Pack 88 to plant trees in tree boxes along Third Street at the Davis Trust Company parking lot in front of the train depot.
Jesse Wise from West Virginia Division of Forestry presented Broughton with a the Tree City flag, a five-year seal, and a glass trophy commemorating the five years that Elkins has been an Arbor Day Tree City. A crabapple tree from West Virginia Division of Forestry was planted near the Youth Center door at the YMCA.
Broughton read the Elkins Arbor Day Proclamation and invited the young scouts to be photographed with the Tree City Flag before they started planting their trees. The Daisy Scouts invited the Cub Scouts to form a circle and sing "Make New Friends but Keep the Old."
