Stonewall Resort will host its first celebration hike in recognition of American Hiking Society's National Trails Day. This hike will take place June 1 at Stonewall Resort State Park, coinciding with hundreds of other hikes occurring across the country.
This hike is noncompetitive and open to people of all ages. Participants can walk, run or bike at leisure in the event, set from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
There will be a $20 registration fee, which will include an event T-shirt and will cover a donation to the Stonewall State Park Foundation for future trail maintenance.
The hike will take place on Rush Run, the 6-mile stretch beginning at the Stonewall Jackson Dam and leading onto the scenic property of Stonewall Resort near the lakeside cottages. Only open for this special event, Rush Run offers an exciting journey for avid hikers and beginners alike, capturing the beauty of the great outdoors in the heart of West Virginia.
The hike will begin with a wide trail overlooking the lake, climbing up a hill to the ridge top of a wooded area. Park Superintendent Sam England and nature guides will be present the day of the event to highlight interesting features along the way.
Participants should wear appropriate hiking footwear and bring any beverages or snacks they might need along the way. A vehicle will follow the course of the trail and can hold extra water or personal belongings. Dogs are welcome on a leash.
Participants must sign a waiver of liability to take part, and participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Registration is requested by May 15 to allow time to order T-shirts.
There will be late registration at 8:30 a.m. June 1 at the parking lot at the end of the cottages. Those registering the day of the event will receive a T-shirt while supplies last.
All registered participants should meet at the parking lot at the end of the cottages no later than 9 a.m. The shuttle will then take registered participants to the starting point.
