D&E College to present Dances of the Diaspora

May 8, 2013
The Inter-Mountain

The Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Davis & Elkins College will present Dances of the Diaspora at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Myles Center for the Arts Harper-McNeeley Auditorium.

The showcase, under the direction of Laurie Goux, adjunct professor of dance at the college, features members of the D&E Dance Club, as well as students of the Survey of Dance Forms and Modern Ballet classes. Special guest performers will be Gold/Platinum recording artist Max-a-Million, Preach Freedom and Gena Musica. The event is free and open to the public.

Student performances will include: "Caribbean Delight" performed by the Dance Club and Survey of Dance Forms students, with music provided by the Brazilian Drum Ensemble under the direction of Nery Arevalo. Modern Ballet students will be dancing choreography by Laurie Goux titled "Saturn Over Sunset," which features music by John Cage.

An additional number, "Suite Chicago Blues," is a collage of music and dance to music of Etta James, Little Walter and Willie Dixon born out of Chicago's Historic Bronzeville neighborhood. "Dances of the Diaspora: Primitive Beats & Global Rhythms" will be performed by Laurie Goux, who also designed the choreography of both of these pieces.

Goux has been performing and choreographing throughout Chicago since 1981. In 1995, she formed Spirit Wing Dance Ensemble under the guidance of her mentors Tommy Gomez and Jimmy Payne Sr. She worked at South Shore Cultural Center where she taught and developed dance curricula from 1991 to 1995. Goux was assistant director of Body Language Dance Company under Tommy Gomez and Englewood Children's Dance Company under Jimmy Payne Sr. and is also a dance instructor with the Augusta Heritage Center Summer Sessions.

Blending Caribbean spice with R&B, hip-hop and a pinch of pop, Max-a-Million has consistently charted top 40 hits in Billboard Magazine and has reached gold and platinum status in 62 countries. He has headlined and performed with other top recording artists such as Backstreet Boys, Monica, Brandy, Coolio, Queen Latifah, Jodeci, Snoop and the Dog Pound, Biggie Smalls, Mary J. Blige and Deborah Cox. His release with Kanye West and Malik Yusef is titled "Chicago."

"We are very excited to present this rich and varied program to the public," Goux said. "The students have been working extremely hard on repertoire that combines modern, primitive and even the blues. It promises to be a great evening."
