The body of a "young adult male" who is believed to have drowned was found floating in the Tygart Valley River Wednesday, police said.

The man's body was discovered just before noon near Belington, said Cpl. M.P. Denison with the Philippi detachment of the West Virginia State Police.

Denison said several railroad workers first spotted the body floating down the river, and it took authorities "less than an hour" to retrieve it from the water.

Emergency personnel load a body recovered from the Tygart Valley River into a Belington Emergency Squad ambulance Wednesday afternoon. Authorities retrieved the body from the river just off of U.S. Route 250, across from New Era Village. The body has been sent to the chief medical examiner’s office in Charleston.

"The body has been sent to the chief medical examiner's office," Denison said late Wednesday afternoon. "We won't know anything else until that gets back."

Denison said the state police won't release any further information until they receive the results of the autopsy, which won't be complete until sometime next week.

When asked if he believed the drowning was suspicious, Denison replied, "I can't elaborate on that ... not right now."

Denison and Sgt. J.A. Wyatt, also with the Philippi detachment of the WVSP, are investigating the case.

Other agencies that responded include the Belington Police Department, the Barbour County Sheriff's Office, the Junior Volunteer Fire Department and the Belington Volunteer Fire Department.
