The greenhouse at Elkins High School will be open to the public on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through June 8.
A free Kids' Workshop is set from from 10 to 11 a.m. During the workshop, FFA members help children plant vegetable seeds. The children take home the pots and watch the plants grow from the seeds they planted. Each child will receive a certificate stating they are now "Green Thumb Junior Growers."
All the plants at the greenhouse have been grown from cuttings or seeds by the students. Money made from the sale will buy next year's pots, soil and plants. The greenhouse also needs a new shade cloth.
Elkins High School FFA members Lauren Owens, Ethan Yardley and Hayleigh Corcoran are shown here with Vicki Cutright and grandson Carter Blake, 5, who earned the Green Thumb Junior Grower certificate.
The greenhouse will offer six-packs, as well as 3-inch and 5-inch pots of vegetables, flowers and herbs. Hanging baskets and mixed pots of flowers will be available as well, along with small herb pots.
The Bob Lloyd Memorial FFA Car Show will be from 10 am. to 1 p.m. May 25, and there will be time to register on site on the day of the show. First prize is a car care bucket and all participants get a dash plaque. The greenhouse will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. as usual that day.
