Area youth who enjoy singing are invited to become part of the new Children's Community Chorus starting this fall as part of the Davis & Elkins College Community Education program.
"We want to offer our elementary school age children an opportunity to participate in an ensemble setting," D&E Community Education Coordinator Liz Marshall-MacVean said.
The Chorus is open to all children who will be in grades 2 through 5 this fall.
"It is a particularly important time for children in that age group to start developing their [singing] voices," said Marshall-MacVean, who also serves as director of the D&E College Choir.
Students will learn a wide variety of choral literature and choral warm-ups from a certified music instructor and choral conductor during rehearsals every Monday from 7-8 p.m. in the D&E Chapel. The repertoire will include sacred, secular and seasonal pieces, including selections by well-known composers.
Classes begin Sept. 9 and continue through Dec. 9 with a public capstone performance on Dec. 15.
"The goal is for the Chorus to be an ongoing community program for our elementary age children," Marshall-MacVean said. "We would also like to have a spring concert."
The fee to join is $180 per semester, which covers the cost of rehearsals, music and a polo shirt for the premier performance. There is no limit to the number of students who may join. Registration remains open until Sept. 30.
Flyers announcing the Children's Community Chorus were distributed to Randolph County elementary schools in May. Marshall-MacVean says additional Community Education classes for youth will be announced in August.
