Boos and applause

June 15, 2013
The Inter-Mountain

-Applause to Ashley Elizabeth Houchin of Arnoldsburg, who will serve as Maid Silvia LXXVII during the Mountain State Forest Festival. Houchin was welcomed to Elkins last weekend at the traditional reception at Graceland Mansion on the campus of Davis & Elkins College.

-Applause to everyone who volunteered during the Randolph County Relay For Life last weekend in Elkins, and the Tucker County event today in Parsons. Relay For Life raises money for the fight against cancer, honors cancer survivors and caregivers, and remembers the victims of the dreaded disease.

-Applause to Mother Nature for keeping our area safe from the worst aspects of the massive storm system that swept across the country this week. Other than a few downed trees and some power outages - mostly in Barbour County -our communities can be grateful that we weren't subjected to either high winds or flash flooding.

-Boo to the black cloud hanging over the city of Elkins. No, not a holdover from this week's storms. We're talking about the Elkins-Randolph County Landfill and it's snarled finances. City Council will take its first look Monday at a proposed ordinance that would attempt to solve some of those financial problems. Here's hoping someone can find a solution to the landfill situation, which may otherwise haunt the town for years to come.
