Monday marked Dr. Michael Mihalyo's first day in his new position with Davis & Elkins College as its 14th president, but he joked Monday felt just like Friday.

"Since I have already been here and worked for the past two years, there was no need for departure from the normal," Mihalyo said. "I am referring to this time as 'phase next.' It is a continuum of all the good things happening at D&E."

Mihalyo said he feels the college is in a wonderful position.

Dr. Michael Mihalyo assumes his new duties Monday as president of Davis & Elkins College. Mihalyo is the 14th president of D&E.

"We have had people on the campus and through the community that help make great things happen for our students," Mihalyo said. "People say the college is just going to take off."

Mihalyo said he is excited about upcoming events at D&E, including the West Virginia Governor's School for the Arts, the Augusta Festival and chamber music concerts, as well as the college's dance program and the community education classes.

"This year, we will offer 32 (community education) classes including cake decorating, world religions and resume building," Mihalyo said. "We will also offer two opera trips - one to Pittsburgh and one to New York."

Mihalyo said the college has a goal to be an exemplary member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The college is also completing renovations on the lobby and ceramics department in the Myles Center for the Arts.

"On Sunday, the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church of Elkins offered a service of transition and celebration," Mihalyo said. "The church and the college have a seamless relationship and it was fitting the ceremony take place at the church. They knocked themselves out. It was a lovely, warm and hospitable gathering. I was very touched."

Mihalyo came to D&E in August 2011 as provost and chief academic officer. In March 2012, he was named chancellor, with responsibility for overseeing the day-to-day administration of the college as well as representing and acting on behalf of the president. He holds degrees from Duquesne and West Virginia University and is an accomplished keyboard artist.

Mihalyo is widely experienced as a teacher and higher-education administrator. Before coming to D&E, he served as chairman of the Division of Fine Arts at Brevard College and as vice president of academic affairs, provost and dean of faculty at Bethany College. He also served as vice president for academic programs of the Appalachian College Association, a consortium of 35 private liberal arts colleges and universities.

G.T. "Buck" Smith assumed the presidency of D&E College on July 1, 2008. He announced his retirement to the board of directors in mid-March effective June 30.
