Gerald Childress

Gerald Lee Childress, Sr., 78, of Frenchton, and recently of Weston, passed the Golden Portal from darkness to the light of God's grace and mercy on Wednesday, July 3, 2013, in Weston, with his family at his bedside.

He was born on Jan. 14, 1935, in Upshur County, a son of the late William Henry and Reta Pauline Martin Childress.

On March 26, 1960, he was united in marriage to E. Jean Hartley Childress, who survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Teresa and husband, John Ward, III, of Century II, Leatha Irvin of Buckhannon, Brenda Childress of Tuscon, Ariz., and Lynda Bishop of Nebraska; one son, Gerald Childress, Jr. and wife, Carol, of Washington; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Dale Childress of Missouri; two sisters, Mrs. Charlie (Pauline) Pritt of Aliquippa, Pa., and Janice Warren of Florida; and special nephew, Kirk Lee Jarvis.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Frances Kooser, Phyllis Ord and Betty Jarvis; two brothers, William Childress and Porter Childress; and one grandson, Joshua Ward.

Mr. Childress was a Methodist by faith. He was a 50-year member of the Rock Cave Lodge 81 A.F. & A.M. and the Aletha Chapter 82 of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and was retired from Moore Business Forms.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 6, 2013, from 4-8 p.m. at Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel, where the Aletha Chapter 82 Order of the Eastern Star will conduct services concluding the visitation.

The funeral will be held on Sunday, July 7, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Frenchton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Earl Cayton officiating. Interment will follow in the Beechtown Cemetery, where the Upshur County Honor Guard will conduct military honors and the members of the Masonic Lodge will conduct Masonic graveside rites.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either the Lewis County Senior Center, West 2nd Street, Weston, WV 26452 or to the St. Joseph's Hospice Care, 1 Amalia Drive, Buckhannon, WV 26201.
