HUTTONSVILLE - The Elkins 12-year-old All-Stars advanced to the state tournament by capturing the District 8 title over the weekend.

Elkins earned a berth in the state tournament, which begins July 20 in South Charleston, by defeating Tygarts Valley, 28-4, on Sunday and rolling past Summersville, 16-2, on Saturday.

Tygarts Valley can join Elkins in the state tournament with a victory against Braxton County at 7 p.m. today. Braxton County stayed alive with a 9-1 win over Summersville in Sunday's late game. Tygarts Valley blanked Braxton County 2-0 on Saturday.

Elkins started off strong in the first inning against Tygarts Valley, scoring three runs on four hits. Jessie Williams belted a two-run single and later scored on a fly ball to center field hit by Jeremy Coger.

Williams started on the mound for Elkins in the bottom half of the first inning. He was erratic however as he allowed walks to the first three Tygarts Valley batters. When Jake Tackett reached first on a throwing error, Brett Smith crossed home plate for a run for the home team.

Williams settled down, however, and ended the inning with two strikeouts.

The top of the second inning saw Elkins send 15 batters to the plate as Tygarts Valley pitching was overwhelmed. The visiting team scored 10 runs on six hits and five walks.

Beau Bright had an RBI single and a two-run double in the inning.

The bottom of the second saw Williams strikeout Tyler Lanham but then walk the next two hitters he faced. Read Schumacher relieved Williams and struck out Smith and Daniel White to end any threat.

The onslaught continued in the third. Eight of the first nine batters for Elkins found their way on base. In all, there were eight runs scored on seven hits, a walk and a hit batsman. Grant Simmons had entered the game in the third and had two singles with three RBIs.

Tygarts Valley did manage to score three more runs in the home half of the third. Five walks were issued by Elkins pitching and two of the runs were walked in. Smith had one of the two hits for Tygarts Valley, an RBI single. However, when Corey Louk was tagged out at home plate the inning came to a close.

Tygarts Valley sent in its fifth pitcher of the contest to start the fourth inning. The strategy was to save arms for the runner-up game. But on this day the strategy did not work as Elkins continued to score with ease.

For the third inning in a row, Elkins batted around and then some sending 12 batters to the plate. When it was over Elkins had seven more runs and four more hits.

The game came to a conclusion in the bottom of the fourth due to the mercy rule.

Beau Bright belted a home run and was also the winning pitcher in Elkins' win over Summersville on Saturday. Schumacher just missed hitting for the cycle when one of his blasts caromed back into play from the top of the outfield wall .
