Leona Ruth Brenwald Phares, a former resident of Montrose, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, after a period of declining health.
She was 92 years of age. She was born Feb. 2, 1921, the sixth of 14 children of the late Jacob E. and Martha Ellen Lower Brenwald of the Lodi Community near Cassity.
She attended the Daugherty School, enjoyed poetry and music and was especially proud of her Swiss heritage. She was married to Ray Lenn Phares Sr. on Jan. 8, 1938, in the Manse of the Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church in Elkins.
Mr. Phares passed away on July 9, 2006. Their children are Janice Leonard and husband, Glenn, of Hedgesville, Ray Lenn Phares, Jr. and wife, Renee, of Winter Garden, Fla., Denver Allen Phares and wife, Linda, of Lakeland, Fla., Gregory Randall Phares, of Kissimmee, Fla., and Debra Graham, of Montrose. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Also preceding her in death were two children, Dorothy Jean Phares Bodkin Johnson and Harry Leon Phares.
The Phares family moved from Elkins to Montrose in 1952 and was active in the community as well as members of Mercy Chapel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Phares was a member of Pleasant Grove Rebecca Lodge No. 98. Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, July 19, 2013, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 20 from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jonas Johnson, Jr. officiating.
