Irene Julia Burky Snyder, of Edgerton, Ohio, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2013, with her daughter and son-in-law by her side. A Celebration of Life service will be today at 3 p.m. at the Helvetia Zion Presbyterian Church.
Irene was born on Oct. 19, 1921, in Helvetia, the daughter of Ernest and Alma (Betler) Burky. She married Clair M. Snyder of Adolph on Dec. 22, 1947, in Cumberland, Md., and he preceded her in death on Sept. 5, 2010.
Irene graduated from Pickens School, attended Davis & Elkins College and West Virginia University and graduated from Ashland College. She taught school for 35 years, starting in the one-room schools of Randolph County and including 26 years at Shreve Schools in Wayne County, Ohio. Formerly of Wooster, Ohio, she was an active member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, where she was a longtime Sunday school teacher, was active in the Women's Guild and sang in the choir. She enjoyed gardening, traveling and reading, and in retirement was a volunteer hostess and guide at the Wayne County Museum. She was currently a member of the Edgerton United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Diana (William) Lutterbein, of Edgerton, Ohio; two grandchildren, Wade D. Lutterbein, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Erica (Stephen) Tootle, of Visalia, Calif.; and two great-grandsons, Otis Henry Tootle and Issac Stephen Tootle; one sister, Alice Phillips; and one brother, Vernon (Virginia) Burky. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Lutterbein, in 1978, and three brothers, Edward, Herbert and Norman Burky.
