Elkins Post 29 met Preston County Post 56 in the American Legion Area 5 Postseason Tournament Thursday evening at Robin Harvey Memorial Field. Elkins (24-19) came away with a 13-3, seven-inning decision in an error-plagued contest.
Cody Gainer started on the mound for Elkins and took control striking out two in the top of the first. Saige Cline reached on an error but was run down trying to steal second base.
Post 29's Brennan Dettinger was first at the plate in the home half of the first and drew a walk. He was moved over on a single by Tyler Shreve and a fielder's choice and then scored on a double-steal.
Elkins scored it's second run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Gainer was issued a walk. He later stole second and third. While he was stealing third there was an errant throw that went into the outfield and he beat the throw at home.
To this point, Elkins' defense looked a little shaky, but Post 56 was held at bay by Gainer.
However, the defense snapped in the top of the third inning as Chase Chambers and Buddy Groves both reached on errors. Caleb Anderson then singled them in and scored himself when Kurtis Petka also reached on an error.
When the top of the stanza was over, Post 56 had taken the lead as three runs had scored on one hit and three errors. None of the runs were earned.
Elkins retook the lead in the home half. It started when Chance Price walked and Doug Smith smacked on RBI double. That was the first run batted in for Post 29. Garrett Riggleman singled in Smith and later scored when Gainer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The home team plated two more runs in the fifth on a single by Smith and a double by AL Johnson. Smith scored on a fielder's choice and Johnson on a wild pitch.
The sixth inning saw Elkins pull away with five more runs. Shreve, Cody Gainer, and Colby Gainer started with three straight singles. Shreve scored on a wild pitch and Cody Gainer was eventually walked in. Dettinger belted a double that scored two runners and almost cleared the bases but Riggleman was out on a close tag at home plate.
Elkins needed just one more run to invoke the 10-run rule in the seventh inning and got it when Cody Gainer singled and was brought in by an RBI single by Price.
It was another great performance by Post 29's pitcher Cody Gainer. He threw six innings and allowed only two hits while striking out 13. He is now 4-0 on the season.
Dettinger pitched the seventh inning and struck out the side.
Post 29's manager Chris George commented after the game, "We played some poor defense out there. I was concerned because we haven't played much recently and it got us tonight, but another good pitching effort by Cody Gainer pulled us through."
Elkins Post 29 will have tournament play today against Buckhannon Post 7 at 5 p.m. at Robin Harvey Memorial Field.
Post 7 advanced over Preston County Post 56 by a score of 9-8.
In that game, Buckhannon's Daniel Powell got the win while throwing a complete game. At the plate for Buckhannon, Corey Reed went four for five including a triple and an RBI. He also scored two runs.
Chase Chambers went four for five, three of them doubles, had four RBI and scored three runs for Preston County.
