A Saturday evening event will offer supporters the opportunity to win a lease on a car or cash, and help a local organization while providing food and fun.
The Elkins/Randolph County YMCA's Drive for Fitness fundraiser will be Saturday at the Elks Club on the Country Club Road, where participants have the opportunity to win either a two-year lease for a Ford Focus or $5,000. The lease is provided by Elkins Fordland.
YMCA Executive Director Sidney Gillispie said there are still some tickets available for the event.
"This is the 11th year for the fundraiser," Gillispie said. "We were a little late with this event this year because of the postponement of the Phillip Phillips concert (which is now set for Nov. 8 at Davis & Elkins College). The Drive for Fitness is always a fun event and we hope everyone will join us Saturday."
Tickets are available at the YMCA. The dinner will include appetizers, a buffet-style dinner, plenty of fun and the opportunity for great prizes. Happy hour begins at 5 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6 p.m. A 50/50 drawing, dancing and the elimination drawing will follow.
"We've sold 160 tickets so far, and our goal is 200," said Jim Jackson, president of the YMCA Board of Directors and owner of Elkins Fordland. "It's an elimination dinner, so the last ticket drawn wins."
Gillispie said funds raised during the event help with operating expenses at the YMCA.
"We are just finishing up our summer camp that was a huge success," Gillispie said. "The camp featured themed weeks such as Star Wars, and the kids had a great time. A field trip to the Weston pool was one of the favorite activities for the participants."
Basketball leagues and classes are among the programs the Drive for Fitness helps support.
"We have many basketball leagues including Mighty Mites, Jerry West, intermediate and adult leagues," Gillispie said. "We are also offering more than 25 classes this fall. We are also gearing up for our after-school program that begins on Monday."
Gillispie said he hopes folks come out to Satuday's dinner.
"The Drive for Fitness is in a really cool location," Gillispie said. "It is a great time that features good food, good people and loads of fun for a really great cause."
