A 19-year-old Belington man is free on bond after being arrested on sexual assault charges Wednesday.
Robert Akers, of 303 Hall Ave., was charged with third-degree sexual assault, a felony, after police received information that Akers allegedly had sex with a 14-year-old female.
According to the criminal complaint in the Randolph County Magistrate Clerk's office, Cpl. K.A. Corley with the Elkins detachment of the West Virginia State Police received a referral from Child Protective Services in Randolph County. When Corley called the CPS case worker, she told him she'd interviewed a 14-year-old female who claimed to have had sexual intercourse with Akers sometime between April 1 and June 20.
On Tuesday, Corley met with Akers, who allegedly admitted to having sex with the female juvenile at her residence in Elkins, according to the criminal complaint.
Magistrate George M. Riggleman set bond at $25,000 cash or surety, and Akers made bail.
The penalty for a conviction of third-degree sexual assault is imprisonment in the state penitentiary for one to five years, a fine of up to $10,000 or both.
