Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge to offer teacher training

September 12, 2013
The Inter-Mountain

A free teacher training session for Project WET-Water Education for Teachers-will be offered at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge Oct. 28 from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Kimberly Maxwell, Project WET's state coordinator from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, will conduct the training. Along with the training, participants will receive a free copy of the most current curriculum guide, "Project WET-Curriculum and Activity Guide."

Project WET's curriculum provides ideas for fun, hands-on and engaging activities designed to gain the interest of the student as well as providing educators with a way to meet their teaching objectives in an innovative way. The training is appropriate for educators in a formal K-12 setting and also those engaged in instruction at private schools, at youth clubs and as scout and 4-H leaders, as well as museum staff and others. The Project WET curriculum has been developed by teachers and resource professionals. The curriculum and activities correlate with state and national standards of learning and are designed to complement existing curricula rather than displace or add additional concepts in the classroom.

Developers of the Project WET program believe that educators hold the key to empowering people to effect sustainable, positive change in local communities for the benefit of all water users. West Virginia coordinator Maxwell observed.

"Project WET is an incredible water education program. It uses fun, hands-on and engaging activities to gain the interest of the student," she said. "From this interest grows an awareness and an understanding of water, our planet's most precious resource. Project WET provides the information and the resources necessary to connect educators with the incredibly important global effort of water education."

Project WET teacher training at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge will be hosted locally by the Friends of the 500th's Environmental Education committee and the Refuge visitor services staff.

The location for the training will be at the Refuge Visitor Center at 6263 Appalachian Highway, Davis, WV 26260. To register email Elaine George at elainegeorge@canaantv.tv.
