Charles Ivan Poe Jr., 81, of Inwood, formerly of Harpers Ferry, departed this life on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at his residence.

Born on June 9, 1932, in Elkins, he was the son of the late Charles Ivan Poe Sr. and Ruby Howell Poe.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was a lay speaker in the Methodist Church and a member of Virginia Lodge No. 1 IOOF of Harpers Ferry.

Charles was a graduate of Davis & Elkins College with the class of 1958. He taught English at Brunswick High School, Brunswick, Md., for 23 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Willa Poe, at home; three daughters, Rachel Beahm and husband, Allen, of Kearneysville, Rebecca Kaetzel and husband, Robert, of Harpers Ferry and Amanda Burns of Charlotte, N.C.; four sons, Robert Poe and wife, Susie, of Barnwell, S.C., Richard Poe of Jacksonville, N.C., Michael Poe and wife, Andrea, of Culpeper, Va., and Joseph Poe and wife, Donna, of Clearbrook, Va.; one sister, Karen Edgell and husband, Gary, of Hurricane; two brothers, Neil Poe and wife, Catherine, of Clinton, Okla., and Ronnie Poe and wife, Victoria, of Lewisburg; and 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Eddie Poe.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at Camp Hill-Wesley United Methodist Church in Harpers Ferry, with the Rev. Luther Osment officiating. Interment will be private in Greenwood Cemetery in Dailey.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Encouragement Inc. (to benefit Kenya orphans) at or 1803 Snowflake Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80921 or a charity of one's choice. Condolences to the family may be expressed at his obituary at
