WVSSAC releases first prep ratings

East Hardy, Tucker County, Moorefield and Pendleton among top 16 in Class A

Even though the season is just three weeks into the schedule, the WVSSAC released the first high school football ratings on Tuesday.

The top 16 teams in each class qualify for the playoffs, which will begin in November.

Huntington tops Class AAA, while Big 10 Conference member Fairmont Senior and Greenbrier West are No. 1 in Class AA and A, respectively.

If the postseasons started today, the area would fill a quarter of the Class A field, as East Hardy (third), Tucker County (seventh), Moorefield (12th) and Pendleton County (15th) are among the top 16.

The Mountain Lions (3-0) will travel to Moorefield on Friday night for a key Potomac Valley Conference contest.

Tucker County enters the game on a 13-game regular-season win streak after defeating Northern (Md.) by a score of 7-0.

Philip Barbour, which defeated Braxton County 20-12 in its last game, is 15th in Class AA. Starting quarterback and all-state performer Dillon Newman, however, suffered a knee injury in the contest and his status for Friday's Big 10 Conference game at Liberty is unknown.

Lewis County (2-1) is tied for 19th in Class AAA and the Minutemen will be idle this week after blanking Herbert Hoover, 21-0, in their last contest.

Other games on tap for Friday night include Elkins at Preston, Buckhannon-Upshur at North Marion, Bath County (Va.) at Pendleton County and Pocahontas County at East Hardy.

The Warriors won their first game of the season last Friday as Devin Rose rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns and returned an interception for another score in a 36-12 win over Pendleton County. Judd Walther also had 131 yards rushing and a TD.
