Comprehensive plan open house set

September 23, 2013
The Inter-Mountain

The City of Elkins will hold an open-house workshop on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at the Old Brick Playhouse at 329 Davis Avenue.

The purpose of this workshop is to solicit input for the city's comprehensive plan. Parking is available on the street and in the parking lot behind Elkins City Hall.

Why is the city engaged in a planning process? The City of Elkins has many strengths and advantages, but it also faces issues common to other West Virginia communities: vacant and neglected homes and businesses, a downtown that offers opportunities for continued improvement, and limited government resources for addressing these matters while continuing to provide essential services.

The purpose of a comprehensive plan is to establish a vision for the future of Elkins and recommend specific projects that the city should invest in. Because the Elkins Planning Commission wants this plan to be guided and shaped by the priorities of residents, business owners, and other stakeholders, public input is vital to this process.

Thursday's meeting will be in an open-house format to accommodate citizens' schedules. There will be no speeches or presentations; the purpose of this event is simply to gather public input. Interested persons can stop by anytime during the posted hours to share ideas, voice concerns, and help formulate a vision for the future of Elkins.

The planning process is projected to last until summer of 2014. There will be several other opportunities for public input, and the process will conclude with two public hearings to review the proposed draft of the plan. All upcoming events will be publicized through local media outlets and on the city's announcements blog (cityofelkinswv.wordpress.com/), Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ElkinsCityHall), and on the email list that may be subscribed to through the "City News Signup" form on the city website (www.cityofelkinswv.com).

The plan is being facilitated by the Elkins Planning Commission. For more information, please contact Sutton Stokes, City Clerk for the City of Elkins, at (304) 636-1414, ext. 1211.
