Dr. Paula June (Brake) Conover, 55, of Carmel, Ind., passed away Sept. 21, 2013.
She was born Oct. 4, 1957, in Elkins, the only child of Donald "Chub" and Virginia Brake.
Paula graduated as the salutatorian from Elkins High School in 1975. She was selected as a Maid of Honor at the 1977 Mountain State Forest Festival. In 1979, she graduated magna cum laude from West Virginia University with a degree in biology and received a medical degree from the same institution in 1984. Following medical school she completed specialty training in pediatrics and subspecialty training in neonatal-perinatal medicine at the University of Kentucky. She worked as a neonatologist in Des Moines, Iowa, and Charleston.
On Aug. 17, 1987, she married Dr. Wayne Conover, whom she met while finishing her pediatric residency in Lexington. They welcomed their son, Kevin, into the world on Sept. 12, 1991. Kevin is now a junior and honor student in the School of Informatics at Indiana University.
In her spare time, Paula enjoyed scrapbooking, flower gardening and home decorating. She was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Paula loved spending time with her friends, her family and especially her dog, Scooby. Above all, her greatest pleasure came from being a mother.
Paula is survived by her husband, Wayne; her son, Kevin; her two stepdaughters, Julie and Linda; their two children, Jackson and Henry; a number of cousins, aunts and uncles; and her constant companion, Scooby.
Paula was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Jean Brake of Elkins.
Services will be conducted Thursday, Sept. 26, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 6050 North Meridian St., Indianapolis, Ind.
In lieu of flowers, Paula has asked that you consider donations to her favorite charities: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the ASPCA and St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
