A Montrose man was killed in an all-terrain vehicle accident Tuesday night in Randolph County, police said.
William Michael White, 31, of Wilmoth Run, was traveling south on Clifton Run Road Tuesday at about 10:15 p.m. when the ATV he was driving veered off the west side of the roadway and struck an embankment, Randolph County Sheriff Mark Brady said Wednesday.
White was thrown from the ATV into the embankment and landed face down in a ditch, Brady said. White was transported to Davis Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:46 p.m.
"He was not wearing a helmet, and deputies believe that speed and alcohol were contributing factors to the crash," Brady said.
In addition to the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, the Leading Creek Volunteer Fire Department and Randolph County EMS responded to the scene.
"ATVs are meant to be ridden safely, and everyone must abide by the same safety measures as when they are operating motor vehicles by not drinking and driving and not driving at excessive rates of speed," Brady said. "ATVs are not designed nor manufactured for such rates of speed."
