A man was killed in a shooting incident in Coalton early Thursday morning, police said.
At the time of the shooting, the victim was with a group of other individuals, who were later questioned by police, Randolph County Sheriff Mark Brady said.
No shooter has been identified and no arrests have been made, Brady said, adding his deputies were investigating to determine if the shooting was accidental, a homicide or a suicide.
"The public is not in danger," Brady said. "This is an isolated incident."
The Randolph County Sheriff's Office responded to a call shortly after midnight regarding a shooting in a rural area on Rich Mountain near Coalton.
The victim, a male adult, was pronounced dead on the scene, Brady said. The victim's name had not been released as of presstime, pending notification of his family, the sheriff said.
"This is a terrible loss for the family," he added.
Deputies are undergoing a search for potential suspects and are interviewing witnesses, Brady said. No motive or explanation as to how the shooting occurred had been released as of presstime.
The West Virginia State Police crime scene team and the Beverly Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene.
