The playoff hopes came to a close for both Philip Barbour soccer teams Tuesday in the second round of Class AA-A sectionals.
The boys' varsity team lost at Berkeley Springs, 4-1, while homestanding Frankfort defeated the PB girls, 4-1.
In the boys' game, the match was scoreless at halftime. However, the Indians scored four goals in the second half after Philip Barbour's starting goalie, Micah Shahan, suffered an injury when he got kicked in the chest by an opposing player. Nick Triplett scored the only goal for the Colts.
"I thought we played pretty well," Philip Barbour coach Ron Jones said. "We just don't have much depth off the bench. If someone gets injured and we have to go to the bench, then we have to play freshmen. We made a few mistakes and they took advantage of it."
The Colts finished the season 5-14-2.
The PB girls trailed just 2-1 at halftime against the Falcons. However, two goals late in the second half by Frankfort were too much for the Colts to overcome. Rylee Shahan scored Philip Barbour's only goal on an assist from Casandra Triplett.
"We just got a couple of bad breaks," Colts coach Pete Ferguson said. "Frankfort really took advantage of their speed. We just couldn't stop them. We controlled the ball probably 60 percent of the game. That doesn't always get the job done when you can't find the net."
Philip Barbour closed the campaign 12-9.
