FAIRMONT - Santino Cava rushed for a pair of scores to lift Class A, No. 12 Notre Dame over Class AA, No. 10 Philip Barbour, 41-38, Friday at Duvall Rosier Field on the campus of Fairmont State University.
"We just didn't have an answer for them offensively," Colts coach Curtis Bodkins said afterward. "They kept running those little toss plays to Cava and he kept cutting them back on us. They did an excellent job running the ball and we just couldn't stop them."
Notre Dame (7-2) got on the scoreboard first when Wakem Simon found paydirt on a 10-yard run with 10:05 on the clock. Adam McMunn kicked the PAT to make the score 7-0.
Philip Barbour (6-3) scored when Dylan Johnson drove the ball in from five yards out. Saige Cline added the PAT?to tie the game.
Cava put the Irish back on top early in the second quarter on a 2-yard dive. McMunn's PAT made in a seven-point cushion.
Not to be outdone, Johnson busted up the middle and broke free for a 70- yard score. Cline's PAT tied the game again at 14-all
On the next possession, PB's Elijah Matlick caused a fumble and recovered it for the Colts. Cline later kicked a field goal to make the score 17-14 at intermission.
The Colts got the ball first in the second half. However, a fumble on the exchange gave the ball to the Irish.
Cava then drove the ball to the 1-yard line before quarter Tyler McKinsey powered it in for the score. McMunn missed the PAT, keeping the score 20-17.
The Irish scored again with :42 left in the third quarter when McKinley hit Jordan Miller on a 25-yard touchdown pass to stretch the lead to 10 after the conversion kick.
The Colts fired back in the fourth quarter when Morgan Stalnaker found paydirt on a 12-yard run. Cline's PAT made the score 27-24.
The Irish controlled the clock with several short runs moving the ball upfield until Simon found the end zone again with 5:04 left on the clock. McMunn's kick made it a 10-point cushion once again.
The Colts, however, still had some spark left. Quarterback Tyler Titchnell hit Al Johnson on a 55-yard pass to cut the deficit to 34-31 after the PAT kick.
On the next series for ND, Cava rumbled 66 yards for his second touchdown with 2:56 left in the game. McMunn's kick made the score 41-31.
The Colts refused to give up, capping a long drive with a 7 yard touchdown run by Titchnell to get within 3 after the conversion kick.
The Colts then attempted an onside kick, but the ball didn't travel the necessary 10 yards, giving the Irish possession and the victory.
PB's Al Johnson was ejected from the game after arguing with the referee about the call.
The Colts will travel to East Fairmont next Friday night for a key Big 10 contest with playoff implications on the line.
Notre Dame will travel to Clay-Battelle on the same evening. The Irish visit Tucker the following week.
