The Philippi Public Library was well-represented at the Tucker Community Foundation's Run For It! race in Davis Sept. 28.

The library's team of 29 registered runners and walkers proudly wore the library's team t-shirts picturing the Philippi Public Library "bookworms." The library's team was one of more than 50 local teams from Garrett County, Md., and Barbour, Grant, Mineral, Preston, Pocahontas, Randolph and Tucker counties gathered to earn support for their projects.

According to team captain and library director Judy Buckner Larry, "There was greater participation and sponsorship this year. The contributions of time and financial support by the team and many sponsors pushed the library's total amount of money raised to $11,321, including $6,576 in sponsorship and fundraising monies, $4,600 in awards on race days and $145 in entry fees. That is more than double the amount the library raised last year."

The Philippi Public Library participated in the Tucker Community Foundation’s Run For It! in?Davis.

The Tucker Community Foundation awards received by the Philippi Public Library included $100 2K Luck of the Draw (Sherley Bice), $1,000 from the Bernard McDonough Foundation, $1,000 for Best Effort Top Five, $1,000 award from the Barbour County Commission, and $1,500 from the Top $$ Teams third place.

The library strives to provide quality materials, programs and services which fulfill the educational, informational, cultural and recreational needs of the community and fosters lifelong learning. The library offers an array of services, programs and classes for children, teens and adults.

In order to continue to offer these programs and services and to provide patrons with opportunities to learn and explore new and emerging technologies, the library must update technology.

"These funds will be used to make any necessary technological updates," Larry said. "We are looking at additional costs for the new technology and software that we will have to purchase to circulate and catalog books and other updates to our patron computers, so this fundraising is essential to the library.

"We asked the community to help us by 'Digging Deeper and Aiming Higher,' the theme of our fundraising event, and they did. We want to shout a loud 'thank you!' to our community, board of trustees, team, sponsors, to the award sponsors and to the Tucker Community Foundation," Larry said.
