A weekend accident in Franklin resulted in one fatality and two injuries, officials said.

At approximately 6:39 p.m. on Friday, Trooper K.J. Varner and Corporal J.M. Ware responded to a single wreck off Smoke Hole Road, near the Pendleton-Grant County line, according to an official press release from the West Virginia State Police.

The driver of the vehicle, Orville Bradley Cook, 52, of Petersburg, and one passenger were transported to the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Va., for treatment, the press release said. Another passenger, Jeffery G. Swick, 52, of Petersburg, died at the scene, police said.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation; however, State Police officials do believe that alcohol may have been a factor.
