Mr. Merrill H. Poling Sr., 87, a resident of the Watercamp Road near Belington, departed this life at 5:10 p.m. Saturday evening at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born Dec. 19, 1925, at Valley Furnace in Barbour County, a son of the late Henry and Margaret "Pidge" Poling.
On Dec. 16, 1949, at Oakland, Md., he was united in marriage to the former Helen Marie Wilson, who preceded him in death on Feb. 23, 2007.
Survivors include two daughters, Michelle Ann Dixon of White Lake, Mich., and Rhonda Ware and husband, Delbert, of Belington; three sons, Duane Poling and companion, Michelle, of Weston, Merrill H. Poling Jr. of Salisbury, N.C., and Stephen Poling of Belington. Also surviving are five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by 10 siblings and one great-granddaughter. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Poling was a lifelong farmer and a member of Valley River Church of the Brethren in Junior. He attended the schools of Barbour County and was a veteran of the United States Army, honorably serving his country during World War II.
Friends will be received at Talbott Funeral Home, 56 N. Brandenburg St. in Belington from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, and again Thursday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. when final rites will then be conducted from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Larry Poling officiating. Interment will follow in Shiloh Cemetery near Kasson where full military rites will be accorded by the West Virginia Honor guard and American Legion Post 96 of Belington.
