Three Chamberlain benefits canceled

ELKINS - Three benefit events scheduled to raise funds for the Chamberlain family were canceled Wednesday, one day after the mother of the family succumbed to injuries sustained in a tragic fire.

Six members of the family - father Alan Chamberlain, 29; mother Jennifer Chamberlain, 34; and children Katie Bolgar, 11, Isabella Chamberlain, 4, Brienna Chamberlain, 2, and Alanna Chamberlain, 2 - perished as a result of injuries sustained in an early morning fire at their home on Central Street Oct. 28.

Jennifer Cassidy said Wednesday three events she helped organize with a group called Friends of the Chamberlain Family have been canceled, including a spaghetti dinner at the First Baptist Church originally slated for 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, a bingo bash on Nov. 30 and a chicken BBQ Nov. 23.

Cassidy, a longtime friend of Jennifer Chamberlain, left a voicemail message to The Inter-Mountain saying that going forward with the benefits no longer seemed the appropriate thing to do after Jennifer Chamberlain passed away Tuesday.

Cassidy, of Hambleton, helped organize the candlelight vigil Nov. 4 for family, friends, emergency personnel and community members to gather, remember and pray for members of the Chamberlain family. Hundreds attended that ceremony at the Elkins Town Square.

A checking account set up by Elkins Mayor Van Broughton to gather donations for the family netted nearly $40,000 in a little more than a week and a half.

An auction, cake walk, 50-50 drawing and sale at George Ward Elementary School Saturday brought in nearly $50,000 to help with funeral and medical expenses for the family.
