First Energy: Brief outages not weather-related

ELKINS - Many residents' lights have flickered in recent days as a result of electrical service going out for just seconds at a time. A power company spokesperson said Friday those brief outages have not been weather-related.

"I don't believe storm debris is what is causing the outages," said Greg Hefner, First Energy Corporation external affairs manager for Randolph County.

Hefner said the company is aware of the situation and "had a planned equipment replacement in the Lough Lane Substation." The substation is located behind the Tygart Valley Mall and serves most of Elkins.

During the time First Energy was replacing the equipment, two circuits had to be tied together and run into one circuit, which created extra exposure and led to the brief outages, he said.

Hefner also said the work was "all completed and the replaced equipment will enhance the service provided."
