Hello from Barbour County! I hope that everyone had a good Thanksgiving and a successful deer hunt.
Let's not forget to be thankful every day of the year.
Just think... this is the last day of November. Just one more month, and 2013 will be gone.
On Sunday a fundraiser will benefit the Philippi Fire Department. For $9.11, you can get the breakfast or lunch buffet at the Medallion Restaurant. This price includes a drink and tax, and 100 percent goes to the fire department. Philippi firemen will be waiting on tables. This is the third year for this event. Come out to eat and support your local fire department!
On Friday at 7 p.m., the annual Christmas parade will be presented in downtown Philippi. The theme is "A Civil War Christmas."
Also on Friday from 4-9 p.m., and on Dec 7, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., a Christmas craft show will be offered in the basement of the Philippi City Building.
On Dec. 7 at 6:30 p.m., the Belington Christmas parade will kick off. Santa will be in attendance and the annual tree lighting ceremony will take place.
Just a reminder that Santa is still in need of some elves to wave at the children at the North Pole in Belington. If you would like to be a helper, just come to the City Park Thursdays through Sundays at either 5:30 p.m. or 7:45 p.m.
Philippi Public Library would like to thank the library's team and sponsors who participated in the Run For It 5K at Davis this year. The team raised a total of $11,321 and the participation was very much appreciated.
The library will be having a Food for Fines week from Dec. 9-14. If you have fines for damaged or late books, you can bring in food for the food pantry, and the fines will be forgiven.
Knit Whits will meet at Philippi Library on Dec. 10 from 6-8 p.m. This is a fun time to get together and do crafts and sewing.
On Dec 11 at 5:30 p.m., a flashlight candy cane hunt will be offered in the basement of the City Building in Philippi. This is free for children up to the age of 12. This will be followed by crafts, a snack and a story.
Looking ahead to Dec. 14, the Belington Police Department will hold their second annual Shop With A Cop basketball game. This will be played at the Philip Barbour gym at 6 p.m. and will include all Barbour County law enforcement and fire departments. The goal is to raise enough money to be able to take at least one child shopping from each of the schools in Barbour County from grades K-12.
Now that colder weather is here to stay for a while, some people will have a fire in their fireplace. Please be sure that you enjoy that fire, and that it doesn't turn into a nightmare. Have your chimney checked and cleaned before using it, and be sure to stay safe.
If you have any Barbour County news that you would like to see in The Inter-Mountain, give me a call at 823-2539 or send email to firstname.lastname@example.org. I love hearing from you!
Until next time, with Thanksgiving just a few days ago, let's always remember: It's not happy people who are thankful; it's thankful people who are happy.
