BUCKHANNON - The Shinnston Community Band will present a holiday concert at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Way of Holiness Church off Corridor H (Route 33) in Buckhannon.
The group, under the direction of Mike Wilson, will feature traditional and nontraditional Christmas music that children, young and old, will enjoy.
Selections include traditional tunes such as "Sleigh Ride" and "Hallelujah Chorus" and nontraditional ones such as "Celtic Carol," "3-Minute Nutcracker," "Good Swing Wenceslas,." an entertaining version of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" and more.
The Shinnston Community Band is made up of professional and amateur musicians from the north central West Virginia area.
The group formed as a result of the Shinnston alumni band, which met once every four years for alumni weekend in Shinnston. A nucleus of members wanted to form a community band and, under the leadership of Harrison County band directors Randall Hall and Louis Oliverio, it became a reality. The group performs four to six times a year.
The Shinnston Area Development Foundation has traditionally sponsored the annual Christmas concert.
The performance is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. The band does accept donations at its performances, which helps to offset the cost of music and related expenses.
The band is on Facebook and Twitter (@ShinnstonBank) and has its own website at www.shinnstonband.com.
