ELKINS - Santa Claus is coming to town, and he'll be riding in a horse-drawn carriage.
The Elkins-Randolph County Chamber of Commerce will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday in downtown Elkins, featuring the theme "Sugar Plums and Christmas Drums."
"There will be at least 50 entries in the parade this year, including the highly anticipated appearance of Santa and Mrs. Claus," said Jess Arbogast, the ERCCC executive director. "This year Santa will appear in a more traditional form of transportation. He and the lovely Mrs. Claus will be riding through the parade in a horse-drawn carriage."
Parade-goers are invited to come to the Elkins-Randolph County YMCA following the parade for many festive activities, including photos with Santa, a puppet show by SonShine Puppet Ministry from Otterbein Church in Elkins, refreshments and craft projects.
A Christmas card station will also be available for the children while they wait to see Santa. Cards that are colored and decorated by the children will be donated to local hospitals and nursing homes, so the joy of the season can be spread throughout the community and with those who are unable to attend the festivities.
Refreshments will be served to the children while they decorate their cards, watch the puppet show and make wish lists to give to Santa. The Inter-Mountain will provide a photographer to take photos with Santa. No charge will be administered to receive a single printed image. Pictures will be available for pickup at the paper's office on Railroad Avenue in Elkins or may be mailed upon request. Photo CDs will also be available at a nominal fee.
Whitney Phillips, chair of the Christmas Parade, said, "With the little changes that have taken place, I'm excited to see how the children will react during the parade and with the activities at the YMCA. I feel it's going to be an enjoyable time for the whole family to start off the holiday season."
The parade will follow a familiar route, beginning in south Elkins at Wimer Field and running through town, ending at the YMCA.
The Chamber is still accepting volunteers to help with the parade. If interested please contact the Chamber office at 304-636-2717.
