HAMBLETON?- Class A, No. 4 Tucker County used a strong second quarter to get past Philip Barbour, 48-34, in its season opener on Friday night.
The Mountain Lions held a slim 12-8 advantage after one quarter before outscoring the Colts 17-2 in the second canto.
"It was a good first game for us," Tucker County coach Jim Ambrose said. "The kids played hard on defense, which we needed because we got off to a slow start on the offensive end.
"I give Philip Barbour and coach (Stanley) Fitzwater a lot of credit. His team battled us to the end and never quit playing."
Tucker County had nine players reach the scoring column, led by Stephanie Betler with nine points. - all coming in the first half. Freshman Elizabeth Nichols added seven points off the bench and Savannah Ambrose six points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.
Freshman Chelsea Mayle had eight points and Nikki Shriver seven markers for the Colts, who fell to 0-3.
Tucker County will host Tygarts Valley at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for a Potomac Valley Conference tilt
Philip Barbour will entertain Big 10 Conference foe Lewis County at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
