Elmer Sponaugle, 86, of Franklin, passed away Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, in Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, Va.
He was born Sept. 8, 1927, at Hunting Ground, and was the son of the late Kennie Sponaugle and Ella Vandevander Sponaugle.
Elmer was a logger and had been a mail carrier for 42 years. Along with his mail route, he delivered The Inter-Mountain newspaper. He was a handyman and an avid gardener and was a faithful member of Friends Run Church of the Brethren, where he served in many capacities including deacon and adult Sunday school teacher.
On Nov. 19, 1949, he married Kathryn Bland Sponaugle, who preceded him in death June 3, 2001.
Surviving are two daughters, Sue Ruddle and her husband, James, of Franklin and Sarah E. George of Franklin; three sons, Elmer Sponaugle, Jr. and his wife, Sammye, of Grottoes, Va., John K. Sponaugle and his friend, Ruth Bauer, of Franklin and Billy C. Sponaugle and his wife, Lisa, of Franklin; one sister, Marie Bennett of Beverly; one brother, Ward Sponaugle of Parsons; 12 grandchildren, Jeremy Ann Kump, Jill Kathryn Nesselrodt, Joshua Hanna, Amber Hanna, Jammy A. Ruddle, Jenny Sue Harper, Bobbi George, Nikki Calhoun, Alex George, Molly Godfrey, Megan Cosner and Sam Sponaugle; 12 great-grandchildren, Austyn Elizabeth Kump, Cameron Dale Kump and Jayne Victoria Kump, Laikyn Hanna, McKenna Hanna, Piper Hanna and Jessica Ruddle, Emily Ruddle, Andrew Harper, Marshall Harper, Charles Calhoun and Haley Calhoun; and a very special friend, Betty Jean Hoover of Franklin.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at the chapel of Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin with Pastor Thomas Hanks officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery at Franklin. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin.
