ELKINS - The City of Elkins is welcoming three new additions to the Elkins Police Department.
Kevin Shiflett, Tyler Foster and Justin Thorne were sworn in as newly recruited police officers by Elkins Mayor Van Broughton Monday.
Lt. S.D. Richards, who was also present, said the new officers will hopefully provide some much-needed support to the police staff.

Elkins Mayor Van Broughton, left, welcomes new Elkins Police Department recruits Kevin Shiflett, Tyler Foster and Justin Thorne, along with Lt. S.D. Richards in City Hall. The recruits have to be sworn in two weeks before they go to the Charleston Police Academy on Jan 6.
"This will put us up to a working total of 11," said Richards. "For a good part of the year, we were functioning with only seven officers, pulling extensive 12-hour shifts or more. This will hopefully give us enough personnel to put us back on track for a 40-hour work week."
The process to become a police officer is "intensive" and requires quite a bit of preparation,
