Fire, wreck mar Christmas in Barbour

December 27, 2013

PHILIPPI - Two unfortunate events occurred on Christmas Day in Barbour County: a Philippi house fire left one family without a home, while two people were injured in a one-vehicle wreck.

Philippi Fire Chief John Green said the fire started around 6 p.m. Wednesday at a residence on Scale Road. He said a man was spending Christmas evening with his aunt, uncle and fiance at the house, but all escaped safely without

injuries.

Green said the fire began in the home's wood-burning stove and then spread through the house.

"It was a total loss," Green said. "They didn't have any insurance."

Green said he was unaware if a fund has been set up to help the family. He said firefighters - including 10 from the Philippi Fire Department, 10 from the Belington Volunteer Fire Department and seven from the Nutter Fort Fire Department - worked at the scene for nearly three hours. The Barbour County EMS also assisted during the blaze.

In an unrelated incident that occurred soon after the fire, first responders were called to the scene of a wreck on Route 38 near Valley Furnace, where two people visiting from Morgantown were involved in a car accident that claimed the life of a small dog riding with them.

Green said the driver lost control; the vehicle ran off the road before hitting an embankment and flipping on its side.

One person was transported to Broaddus Hospital, but the other refused treatment, Green said. No names were released by presstime.

"He really needed to go but he refused," Green said. "He was worried about his baby, that little dog."

The Philippi Fire Department, Barbour County Sheriff's Department and Barbour County EMS all responded at the scene, Green said.
