ELKINS - Davis Health System officials on Thursday announced a new name - Davis Medical Center - for the campus that includes Davis Memorial Hospital and other DHS facilities.
While construction continues on a new state-of-the-art medical building, a group of nearly 50 people, comprised mostly of DHS employees and board members, gathered at a press conference at the hospital Thursday morning.
Davis Medical Center includes the hospital, the new 73,000 square-foot addition adjoining DMH, and several other buildings, including the Cancer Care Center and Tygart Valley Medical Specialists.
"The new name better reflects the integrated care and scope of services to be offered when the medical center opens later this year," Mark Doak, DHS president and CEO, said during the conference.
The new name is meant to show that DMH has grown to become more than just a hospital. The facility has evolved into a full-service network of health care services that provide for more than five counties, officials said.
The services offered include primary and specialty physicians, cancer care, a surgical center, 24/7 emergency care, a family birthing center, diagnostic services, sleep study and pain management clinics, urgent care centers, pharmacies, home medical equipment, and home health and oxygen services.
"We are also the only certified oncology lab in the state," Doak said. "We provide more than just in-patient services."
Dr. Steven Toney, Davis Medical Center chairman of the board, said, "We wanted a name that represented our services, which are so much more than a hospital and in-patient setting."
"We do more than what people think here," Doak said. "We have outstanding employees and will continue to provide patient-first care."
Some divisions within the Davis Medical Center will begin using the new name immediately, but the full transition will not be completed until the medical center building opens.
This will allow time to introduce a new logo while also implementing other updates throughout all Davis Health System affiliates, officials said.
The inclusion of "Davis" in the new medical center's name is to continue to honor the vision of the region's well-known forefather, Henry Gassaway Davis.
He founded Davis Memorial Hospital in 1902 to care for the sick.
"We felt it was important to maintain the connection to the Davis name," Doak said
"We have expanded to be far more than a hospital," he added. "We are Davis Medical Center."
