Whether the natural elements are cold or moderate, many state parks in West Virginia are open for a trip-away option at lodges, cabins and even some campgrounds. January lodging and camping discounts are being offered at some facilities.
"Visits in winter months to parks are great opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and the comfort that rooms, cabins and restaurants offer," said Emily Fleming, interim state parks chief and assistant to the director of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. January overnight and recreational opportunities at West Virginia's state parks include:
- WV50, offering a reduced room rate of $50 per night at seven lodges in January. It is available through the online reservation program or by calling the parks and asking for WV50. Participating state parks include Twin Falls, Pipestem, North Bend, Hawks Nest, Cacapon, Chief Logan and Tygart Lake.
Cabins are available at state parks throughout the winter.
Winter camping at Beech Fork State Park. Full hookup sites are open when campers heat-tape or properly insulate the camper waterlines. Full hookup includes water, electricity and sewer. Rates are $33 for full hook up.
Beech Fork State Park is extending a half price campsite rental rate to campers who are affected by the water outages during the state of emergency in nine West Virginia counties.
Cabin and Lodge Discounts at State Parks. State Parks cabins are open all year and some offer attractive winter rates. Parks with cabins open year-round are Beech Fork, Blackwater Falls, Bluestone, Cacapon, Canaan Valley, Cass Scenic Railroad (houses), Lost River, North Bend, Pipestem, Stonewall, Twin Falls and Watoga.
Beech Fork State Park's Wildlife Watchers cabin special is offered from Nov. 1 through March 31. Guests can rent two nights, save 20 percent off the published rates and stay the third consecutive night at no charge.
Blackwater Falls State Park, near Canaan Valley Resort and ski/tubing area, has a Stay-and-Play rate for mid-week visitors. The cabin rental rate for the north- or south-side cabins is 20 percent off mid-week through March 17, 2014.
