BUCKHANNON - Upshur County Relay For Life is inviting members of the public to attend its annual kick-off at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Buckhannon Moose Lodge in Buckhannon.
A meal of baked steak will be catered by Audrey's Restaurant, and the program will explain how members of the community can form teams and raise money to fight cancer in 2014.
Money raised goes to the American Cancer Society, which provides cancer support services and research to find a cure for cancer.
Last year, Upshur County raised $123,222.
The 2014 Relay for Life is scheduled for Friday, July 25 at Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School.
The co-chairs for 2014 are Bobby Stell and Jewel Fisher, long-time committee members and team members with Upshur County Relay for Life.
Stell said, "This year's theme is Christmas in July, and we hope to be giving the gift of a cure with monies raised this year. We have lots of events planned throughout the year for fundraising and also for raising the awareness of the dangers of cancer.
"We hope that our county gets out and supports us once again as we fight this battle, and as always, we appreciate their continued support."
Fisher added, "Being involved in Relay gives you a spirit of giving back to the community and also helping to find a cure for this terrible disease."
