WESTON - Freshman Chelsea Mayle hit for 19 points Tuesday night to power Philip Barbour past Lewis County, 42-34, in Big 10 Conference action.
"Our defense played really well," Colts first-year coach Stan Fitzwater said. "From the onset, we preached that defense wins games and we've been playing lockdown defense. Our girls have guts. They aren't afraid to go after the ball.
"All of their knees are bruised and banged up, because they go after the ball. They play extremely hard and with intensity."
Haley Stewart added nine points and freshman Brooke Pomp contributed 18 rebounds and two points for Philip Barbour, which improved to 4-8 and halted a four-game losing streak.
Junior Karli Hamrick paced the Minutemaids with 11 points. Sophomore Brooklyn Perkey added nine points.
In junior varsity action, the Colts defeated Lewis County, 38-31. Freshman Shayna Rexrode led PB with 10 points and sophomore Madison Skidmore scored nine points.
"Our JV program is developing nicely," Fitzwater said. "I'm proud of the effort the girls are putting forth."
Both teams will return to action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Big 10 foes, as Philip Barbour will host Fairmont Senior and Lewis County will visit Lincoln.
