Alan Eugene Phillips, 61, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Sunday evening, Jan. 26, 2014, in Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown. He had been in declining health for the past three weeks.

He was born Tuesday, Aug. 12, 1952. at Elkins, a son of the late Howard Alton Phillips and Jeanette Lee Rennix Phillips, who survives at Elkins.

On April 1, 1972, at Elkins, he was married to the former Brenda Lynn Vandevender, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Jamie Alan Phillips and wife, Shelley, of Bridgeport and Joshua Paul Phillips and Cindy Phillips, of Montrose; one sister, Diana L. Peters and husband, David, of Elkins; three grandsons, Tyler Stephen Plum, Corey Jacob Phillips and Joshua Paul Phillips Jr.; his mother-in-law, Alice C. Vandevender of Elkins; and three sisters-in-law, Beth Rice Phillips, of Elkins, Joan Antolini Phillips of Winfield and Paula Siler and husband, Joseph, of Parsons; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were three brothers, Alton Chester "Butch" Phillips, William Howard "Bill" Phillips and Eric Wayne "Rick" Phillips; one sister, Cynthia "Kay" Phillips Riddle; and father-in-law, S. Paul Vandevender.

He was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1971 and was a truck driver, having worked for the city of Elkins for more than 30 years. He was an active member of Elkins Church of the Brethren for many years, where he was a member of the board of directors and was a volunteer fireman for more than 30 years with Elkins Volunteer Fire Department. He was a loving father and grandfather and was an avid hunter.

The family will receive friends at Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 5 to 8 p.m. today. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home Thursday, Jan. 30, at 12:30 p.m. Pastor Mark Teets will officiate, and interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins.

The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to Elkins Volunteer Fire Department, 216 4th St., Elkins, WV 26241 or Elkins Church of the Brethren Building Fund in care of Nancy Thompson, Scott Ford Road Elkins, WV 26241.
