William E. McEldowney Jr., 84, of Wheeling, passed away Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, in Forbes Hospice.
He was born Nov. 14, 1929 in Elkins, son of the late William E. Sr. and Thelma Sturm McEldowney.
Bill was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1947 and a graduate of Davis & Elkins College. Bill first became involved with the Wheeling YMCA in 1952. He became the executive director in 1970, and during his time with the YMCA, he was very influential in starting or improving many sports programs; swimming, wrestling, flag-football, volleyball and many others. He started exercise programs for woman, the first of its kind in Wheeling. In 2001, he was given the "Mr. Mat" award. Bill dedicated his life to the Wheeling YMCA, and only left for two years to go to Greer, S.C., to help them develop their YMCA program. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Phillips McEldowney.
He is survived by four children, Debbie McEldowney of Florida, Sharon Merryman (Tim) of Shadyside, Ohio, Pam Patterson (Craig) of McKeesport, Pa., and Jim McEldowney (Amy) of Edinboro, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Lisa and Billy Merryman, Bryce and Courtney Patterson, Jacob, Luke and Elise McEldowney; a brother, Thomas McEldowney (Janet) of Nashville, Tenn.; a niece, Kim Pennycuff (Neil); and two great-nieces, Ashley Chapman and Allison Pennycuff.
Friends will be received Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Kepner Funeral Home, 900 National Road, Wheeling (304-232-2732), where a service will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Kathy Barnhart officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
