Herbert O. McClain Sr., 83, of French Creek, the Frenchton community, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at his home.
He was born on Sept. 2, 1930, in Upshur County, a son of the late Warren Hayes and Violet Merle Bennett McClain.
On March 26, 1955, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Cora Lager McClain, who preceded him in death on Nov. 21, 2011.
He is survived by three daughters, Diana Matheny and husband, Michael, of Crawford, Sandra Thompson and husband, Paul, of Freedom, Pa., and Betsy Jackson and husband, Rusty, of French Creek; two sons, Herbert McClain Jr. and wife, Twila, of French Creek and Thomas Allen McClain and wife, Vicki, of French Creek; 10 grandchildren, Steven and Qiana Hyre, Nicole (Hyre) and Quentin Metzner, Paul III and Angela Thompson, Jeremy Thompson and Natalie Canello, Jason and Nicole Thompson, Gretchen (McClain) Betz, Elizabeth (Jackson) and Brad Tolliver, Chris Jackson, Leah (McClain) and Tony Chidester, and Jacob McClain; and 16 great-grandchildren: Vance Hyre, Caleb Corder, Erin and Easton Metzner, Madyson and Paul IV Thompson, Elijah and Ashton Thompson, Taylor and Courtney Thompson, Jonathon Betz, Haley McClain, Owen, Tanner and Jase Chidester and Hannah Tolliver. He also is survived by one sister, Maxine Malcolm of French Creek.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Hilda Posey; and one brother, Ford McClain.
Mr. McClain served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Feb. 1, from 4-8 p.m. at Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel. The funeral will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at the funeral chapel with Pastor David Jessie officiating. Interment will follow in Beechtown Cemetery.
