Geraldine Fortney, 83, a resident of Beverly, passed away Friday morning, Jan. 31, 2014, at her home.
She was born Sept. 13, 1930, in Mill Creek, a daughter of the late Wirt Vanpelt and Russie Taylor Vanpelt.
On Sept. 11, 1947, in Elkins, she was married to John Emery Fortney, who preceded her in death April 26, 2004.
She is survived by one son, Michael J. Fortney of Elkins; and four daughters, Carol Cross of Kearneysville, Dorothy Ray of Elkins, Rosemary Ray of Montrose and Connie Pevarnik of Martinsburg.
Also surviving is one brother, Raymond Vanpelt of Elkins; two sisters, Mary Harris and Genevieve Higgins, both of Elkins; and a special friend, Bob Leary of Beverly. Seventeen grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren also survive.
Also preceding her in death was one brother, Charles Vanpelt; and one sister, Norma Fortney.
Geraldine was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting. She attended the Gospel Light Tabernacle.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins.
A funeral service will be at noon Tuesday with Rev. A. H. Belt officiating. Interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens.
